Hi - I live in a rent-stabilized apt. w/ 2 roommates. The apt. is kind of
run down but we actually got the super/mgmt. co. to make some improvements
this summer. They painted the apt., fixed some things that were falling
apart and said that they would replace the rug. The carpet is DISGUSTING -
completely stained and NO padding left underneath whatsoever. The mgmt.
co. at first said yes, new carpet, so did the super. Then the super went on
vacation and no new rug. After a few weeks passed, we called the mgmt. co.
again and they said "we'll get it cleaned" and we said, no we need a new
rug. They sent a 'specialist' over, he looked at it and agreed that we
needed a new carpet, not just a cleaning but that we had a cat and so it
now might be a problem. The cat is declawed, has not contributed to the
staining in any way, and the rug does not smell (insufficient padding isn't caused
by a cat, it's caused by years of wear and tear...). We called the mgmt. co.
again and they said "you have a cat, we need to come check to be sure he's
really declawed". Anyway, to make a long story short, they are giving us
the runaround even though they said way back when this summer that we would
be receiving a new carpet. Any rights on this? I'm not exaggerating when
I say that the carpet is filthy and ancient.
