My sister (a grade school teacher) is moving into the city and found an apt. through a broker, Manhattan Apts., Inc. She saw the aptartement the first day it was listed, took it, paid the 1st month rent and a 1 month deposit. She saw them de-list the apt. from the computer system.
The next day, the broker informed her that the management firm (Yuco Mgmt) had told them that someone had offered 1 yrs rent in advance. They said if she paid that too, she could have the apt. The next day (after talking to our parents for the necessary $$$) she agreed.
Now, the broker says the mgmt firm wants not only the full 12 months rent in advance, but also 2 months rent. I'm pretty upset about all this, but my sister must move in ASAP because she has to start working very soon.
Anyway, is this at all legal? Will we have any recourse after she signs a lease? I think the apt. is rent stabalized.
Cheers,
Rob
