You appear to have had a month-to-month lease, and either party has to give the other party a 30-day/one month notice of termination. You didn't do that and it appears that the landlord was entitled to withhold one month's rent. If the landlord re-rented the apartment before the end of the month, you may be entitled to a refund for that part of the month.
