: I've rented in an apartment complex for quite some time (9 years to be exact).
: Well my lease came up for renewal, and the landlord left a form asking if "I would"
: renew my lease--and I signed off saying that I would renew my lease for
: another year at such and such rate.
: Well some circumstances changed very quickly and I'm moving out.
: My current lease expires on July 31, 1998.

: The renewal notice was followed by a formal lease that I NEVER signed,
: and I returned stating that I'm moving out.
: The complex has informed me that I am liable/responsible for finding a
: sublettor until July 31, 1999, and it's up to the rental agent
: how much help I'll get.

: I can see the perspective of the complex, but MY perspective is that I
: never signed a formal lease so I'm off the hook.

: How can I settle this situation without the trouble of finding a sublettor!
: or can I settle this situation without finding a sublettor or abandoning the
: property?

: thanks much!!

If you never signed a renewal lease and they confirmed that in writing, I would send them a certified letter with a copy of that letter simply stating that you will not be renewing with a "cc" to your attorney.
