Rooming houses may be different. There is a limit of so many occupying so
many square feet, but that's when you put eight people (usually immigrants)
in a room. In most apartment situations, Real Property Law (Live-In lover Law)
allows at least one unrelated roommate -- and the reason, whether economic
or emotional -- is irrelevant. I think it's RPL section 234 or 235, but look it up on the web site.
