: I would consider 2 things:

: 1) Make sure that the current rent you are paying is legal. Check with the DHCR (you can get info about the DHCR on this web site) to see if you are being overcharged. If you are, they can award you possibly treble damages.

: 2) Although I'm not sure, this sounds like a breach of contract. Unfortunately, the only way to know is to consult an attorney. I do not believe this would be a housing court issue. The other thing, since this is a Columbia student, is to check with the Columbia tenants union to see if this landlord is notorious or if this is a common practice.
