This site has information on tenants rights. As of this moment on, you must write down any and all happenings you have with the owners family and their legal advisors. Also if your still paying rent get a receipt, canceled checks are NOT receipts... this is a good time to inspect your apartment for violations and loss of services. This is for your protection.

Most eviction proceedings allow time for a tenants to move out. Don't worry if a new landlord or the previous one gives you a letter demanding you to vacate. For ANY reason you many have for not moving out, please allow a Housing Court Judge to hear the case. Don't sign anything, Don't promise anything. Wait for the court papers.

If the new landlord likes you and would allow you to stay, then everyones happy. If not, You must defend yourself

In your next response please state how many apartments are in the building. ex. Two family, Four, Six.

: We've been living in a residential apartment for 2 years without a lease.
: The woman owning the apartment recently died, so our landlord informed us
: that they (her family) may be selling the building. He says our only assurance
: is that we will get 3 mos notice if the new owner wants us to leave, but
: that he cannot give us a lease since the building is still in the woman's
: name. But he gives us no assurance that once the deed is in his and other
: family members' names that we would get a lease. Do we have any protection,
: or do we have to just get out if the new owners tell us to? We've been paying
: by check, so we do have proof of paying rent. We'd like to stay in this
: apartment and would like to know our rights in this case.
