maintaince man damaged my furniture, landlord refuses to pay!

Posted by Jennifer on March 10, 1998 at 23:01:19:

my landlord hired an outside company to repair the heater in my apartment and gave to man a key to let himself in when we were not at home. he worked in our apartment, unsupervised, and then left. when we returned home, we discovered that our antique dining room table was deeply gouged (it looks like someone "keyed" it). when i asked the landlord about it, he spoke to his repairman who denies ever having TOUCHED the table, much less having damaged it in any way. the landlord then told me that he has had no problems with the repair company in the past and therefore believes him and not us, and we will have to pay for any and all repair costs.

is this legal?????
