: Does anyone out there have an experience/situation to share where it has worked out well to keep a small dog in an apartment? I am considering approaching my very nice landlord with a proposal (he already allows cats) that he allow dogs under a certain size, with a pet deposit, etc. It would be very helpful to have some positive situations to tell him about, since there are already so many bad stories out there, about it not working out. Would be greatly appreciated!

In my experience, most landlords do not want dogs - large or small. There are exceptions, and some
parts of the city seem to be more conducive to allowing dogs than others. It
really depends a lot on the landlord. I have opted to avoid all possible
problems with my (large) dog in my current situation by placing my dog
in doggie daycare (albeit at great expense to me) while I'm at work, however,
this does involve spending extra money, and you must have a doggie daycare
within a reasonable distance from where you live. If you have any documentation
(i.e. from previous landlords, vets, etc. to the effect that your dog
is quiet, and friendly, and non-destructive) bring it. Everything helps, but
it's a challenge. Keep in mind that if you are *renting* in a coop there will be
tenants in the building who own their apartments and are therefore shareholders. If
they don't want dogs in the building they'll let the landlord know about it, whether
you dog is a nuisance or not. (This was my experience. Feel free to email
me for more details.)

Good luck.
