I need to break a joint lease...

Posted by blinded by love in NYC on December 21, 1997 at 03:30:19:

I'm hoping someone here can help... A very serious relationship has
recently ended in me being dumped for another guy, and I need to get out
of this apartment. My ex and I are both 5 months into a year-long joint
lease, and we each are paying 1/2 the rent. (Our parents are our
respective co-signers).

Anyway, what are my rights in this situation? If I give my ex 30 days
notice, is she obligated to find another roommate or move out? I don't
want to be stuck with having to move out and still pay rent on the place
while she takes her time finding a new roommate. If I want to get out of
this place, can I simply ask the landlord that the lease be dissolved with 30-days notice?

Anyone who can help, I'd sincerely appreciate your advice. I made a big mistake
in my life moving in with her, and I'm trying to make as clean a break as possible.

thanks.
