Verbal agreements

Posted by Colleen M on December 05, 1997 at 14:57:37:

If you verbally notified the landlord that you were moving out at the
end of your lease, and afterwards they claim you didn't, is it worth
making them take you to coourt for the extra month's rent?
In my other apartments you moved out when the lease was up, no problem.
I assumed (incorrectly) that this was the case with my 3-moth lease this
summer. Still, 3 times my roommate or I contacted the landlords and asked
if we needed to do anything before we left. All three times we were told
that we were all set and to just leave the keys and a forwarding address.

WE moved out on the last day of our lease and a few weeks later I got a
bill for 1 month's rent + late charges. (I didn't pay a security deposit
because my lease ran from May 1 --Jul 31 and I didn't sign the lease or
move in until mid-May. I really only wanted a 2 month lease.) I called
then and they said that I didn't give thema 30 day written notice so I
was responsible. My complaint is that if they were going to do this than they
shoudl have told us that the 3 times we went in, I would have stayed in the
apartment!!!

Should I make them sue me? It's my word (and my roommates) against theirs.
