take-over lease

Posted by Caty on November 16, 1997 at 08:27:24:

Hi!Situation/circumstances. I have a legal sublease in a Manhattan rent-stabalized building owned by a private school. This sub-lease is up in several months.Recently, i was notified by the over-tenant that he does not"think" he will be returning and would like to meet with me to see what he can to do to "help" me get the apt(take-over the lease.) I have been a sub-tenant in good-standing, rent paid on time, no complaints. And I am interested in taking over the lease.Question:What are my legal rights if any? What recommendations do you have regarding this situation? Should I notify the landlord of my interest in assuming the over-tenant lease "in the event that he(over-tenant) decides not to return?" Thank you for your help!!
