I live in a rent stabilized building in Brooklyn. I have kept a dog
"openly and notoriously" for more than 9 months, which means, as far
as I can tell, that though pets are not allowed in my lease, the
fact that my landlady never took any legal action to make me get rid of
the dog means that she could not evict me for having him, or force me
to get rid of him.
My building was sold 2 months ago. The new landlord (who I thought I was
having a good relationship with) has just sent me a letter saying I must
get rid of the dog in 10 days or else face eviction procedures. Can he do
this? What is the legal status of a stabilized lease when there is a
change of landlord? Any information on this would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Christine
