One thing you may want to know is why is it an illegal multiple dwelling? Check with housing to see if the building is registered, rent stablized, etc. Through tenantnet you can read the multiple dwelling law, real property law and the housing law. If you plan on penalizing the landlord for his actions, be prepared for a fight.
