: I understand that a person living alone in a rent-stabilized apt. can

: family--say, wife and child. My question is this:
: If the leaseholder requests that the occupant be added to the lease,
: 1) is the landlord obligated in any way to do this?
No obligation on part of the landlord unless it's the prime tenant's spouse.
: can the landlord do anything worse than refuse?,
Not that I know, the situation would remain the same.
: and 2) if landlord agrees, is this a new lease, subject to an
: appropriate rent hike?
That's debateable. Most of the time I've seen this tenants wait
until the lease would renew automatically and then do it.
: concerned mainly about making things worse than better by offering
: this to the landlord.
There are other considerations. How will the existing security deposit
be split? If the occupant becomes a prime tenant, then obligations
exist with both parties (and the landlord). The landlord can make
either (or both) responsible for non-payment.
