no lease but rent increase

Posted by Greg on June 01, 1997 at 03:07:10:

I moved into my friend's apartment 14 months ago, 2 months
before his lease expired. I continued to pay $1,350/mo rent.
My landlord never gave me a new lease, despite my request
(my requests are not in writing, however). Now he is trying
to increase my rent to $1,575, a 16.7% increase. I still
have no lease. The apartment has six units, and was built
sometime in the 1940s or before (I'm guessing here) and is
a co-op. I don't know if it is rent stabilized.

How can I be certain my apartment is rent-stabilized
and if so,Is he limited to a 5% increase since the $1,350 has
been established for 14 months? Thank you.
