: I recently moved into a studio apartment on the first floor of a building in lower Manhattan.
: I was wondering if the landlord is responsible for installing window guards, seeing as
: the apartment's windows are on the first floor and face a public courtyard.
: Thanks in advance.

The landlord is responsible for installing window guards (which are not gates or bars, but are just to prevent children from falling out of the window - they do not prevent someone from breaking in). The guards are mandatory if you have children but are optional if you don't.
