Rent Addendum

Posted by AVJ on May 22, 1997 at 12:28:28:

I wanted to give more info. This guy and I met formally a few days before
he left the country. I told him I was looking for a place but since I had
never been a place by myself, financially, I would have to start with a
rent $ amount and go from there. At this time he told me I didn't have
to worry about money; I was doing him a huge favor – he really
wanted someone to look after it while he was gone. So he felt good.
He had already paid rent for the full year. So we developed a physical
relationship. After the first full month he came to visit for a brief
weekend and again when I told him that I couldn't make the rent until later
he said don't worry about any rent. So I thought great. Then we continued
a long distance relationship but things got very strange. I became turned off
by his behaviour and it freaked me out. I decided I would move out prior to
his return and not continue to see him; he had wanted me to live with him
upon his return. So we talked in passing at the gym and he became agitated with
me. He would then come up to my while I was talking with friends and ask me
about rent and when I thought I would pay it. I had to tell him several times
we could talk about it later. He also called my parents who live in another city.
So finally in January I get a letter in which he formally
requests back rent and bills. In February, I respond by explaining what
our verbal agreement was but he feigned ignorance and I just wanted to
clean things up so I began to repay him the $2500 (approximately) with $35 check.
He repsonded with "is that all?" I explained to him that I don't make a lot of
money and that was what I could afford. I guess it wasn't fast enough or large enough
for him so he sued me in small claims court. Now I have to appear in court on June 10
and there is a possibility that I will have to pay much more than I can possibly afford.
I can't afford a lawyer so I am utilizing this internet and stumbled upon this message board.
If anyone can be of help, please e-mail me. I would be extremely grateful.
