: Hi, everyone...I recently attended Housing Court (for the zillionth
: time during the past decade...since my present landlord bought the bldg.).
: In the Mediation Part, primarily to set dates for payment and access for
: repairs (again!),my landlord offered me 6 month's rent to move out. His
: previous offers have been more private, and considerably lower. It seems
: he didn't know such an offer is illegal. The Mediator informed me,in his
: presence,that I could make a complaint. I'm not sure the landlord realized he'd
: made a mistake. It's possible he doesn't care, either because he thinks I
: won't file a complaint,he thinks his attorneys can handle anything, or he
: knows that no punishment, sanction, or fine will be enforced anyway...
: Well, I haven't filed a complaint. Experience has taught me that it
: is probably an exercise in futility. What do you think?
: Incidentally, this is a man who once told me that tenants shouldn't
: have any right to withhold rent, counter-sue, etc. and that such rights
: are one of the things wrong with this country. (For clarification only,
: I might add that this individual was not born in the U.S. I don't know
: if he's a citizen or not. I have nothing against immigrants, naturalized
: citizens, etc. Quite the contrary...but I couldn't help wondering about
: his attitude and opinions..I got the distinct impression that he believes
: that only the wealthy are entitled to legal protection.)

why is it illegal to offer a tenant money to move out? He's not putting a gun to your head. Take the money and run if its a good offer!
