We don't know the specifics of Virginia law, but in some states a tenant
on the lease can have an unrelated roommate (occupant) no matter what the
relationship is (economic or emotional). Here it appears you both were on
the lease. In some cases the lease will speak to this. In other cases you
need to look at occupancy standards. Either way, I'm sure you're upset,
but if you sue them you have to have grounds and must establish actual
damages. Did this arrangement cost you money? Emotional distress? You
might wish to see a good lawyer before jumping into litigation.
