You could always ask your bank for the cancelled check. It depends on the
context. Is he now asking you to come up with a "new" deposit, is
he refusing to return it to you if you move out, or is he refusing
to pay the interest on the deposit? There's a fact sheet on security deposits
in the CTRC fact sheet section. In many cases he's required to put it in
a trust interest-bearing account. When a building is sold, the security deposits
are also transferred and he should go to the previous owner for the records
and the bank accounts. This is a common scam and I would tell him he's waived
any right to object or to claim a new deposit.
