Want to move out early

Posted by Katie McCann on November 09, 1996 at 23:00:22:

I've currently got a rent-stabilized lease which doesn't end until July of 1997. I've got a
chance to move into a great apartment that a friend is moving out of, and I don't
want to pass it up.
What are my options? Someone suggested against subletting, because I'd be
responsible for the apartment. What about assigning the lease? Does that waive
me of the responsibility (ie- would the new tenant pay the rent directly to the landlord?)
Also, someone told me that I can easily break the lease by just telling the landlord
I have to move out, and calling the broker that originally rented me the place and
having him rent it out again. Is this legit?
Thanks for any help.
