Refusal to Pay Rent

Posted by Bill on November 08, 1996 at 17:07:38:

I have just been served with a Dispossess notice after my refusal to pay rent.
The rent was denied after a verbal agreement (I know it should have been in writing) by myself and the management company that no rent would be paid until the gas (for cooking) was fixed.
Apparently there were code violations and my gas was turned off for repairs. Nine weeks later I am moving and still no gas. Two days before I moved, I was served the notice, and have since told the Manager that he is not going to see a dime of rent from me. I also demanded that my security deposit be returned to me one week after the end of the lease.
Now I don't expect to see the security deposit, but it would be nice to pursue some minor action against this company. I also want to prevent them from coming after me for any back rent.

I am curious if there is anyone there who has had a similar problem, or has dealt with the housing board to prevent any further problems with the management company.

Any advise posted here, or emailed to me would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Bil
