: My friend Niki has an apartment which has had no gas (used by the stove) for two months. It is unclear at this point whether the problem is caused by ConEd or the apartment landlord. I believe the problem was due to a leak in the gas pipes in one of the many rented units. This created a requirement to do work on the pipes requiring a total cutoff to all units. Is there any recourse regarding rent, due to the inconvenience and added cost of eating out?
Call ConEd to finnd out exactly what is the problem. It is the landlord's
responsibility to provide safe equipment (including all gas pipes) past
the point where Con Ed enters the building. In many cases the landlord
dallies and tells tenants it is a ConEd problem. Don't believe it. Just
like any maintenance problem, you have the option of withholdinng rent
or taking a HP action when the LL delays. Find out the facts first from Con Ed.
