Noise Problems

Posted by Fort Greene on September 10, 1996 at 18:27:11:

The tenant downstairs recently accused my family of "stepping maliciously."
She has complained several times that we make too much noise going up and
down the stairs, step too loudly on our floors and has exaggerated to our
landlord that we "throw wild parties" and "dance all night." When we have
guests over, she pounds on her ceiling with a broomstick, slams her front
door repeatedly and loudly in an insane frenzy, and recently came to our
front door and complained. A few hours later, the landlord called me to
find out what was going on since she complained to him also.
Ever since her first complaint, my family and I have made an honest effort
to be courteous. With her recent complaints and actions, we now feel that
our rights to privacy and enjoyment of the apartment have been severely
violated.
The landlord has told us that we're in the right, but I want to know what
rights we have to protect ourselves against these frivolous complaints
and harassment.
We have tried the reasonable approach; but it hasn't worked since she seems
to have more than a few screws loose. What can we do? Thanks for your help.
