I have an unusual problem I need help with -- my roommate, her father and
myself split the rent on our apt. 3 ways. Usually I write a check for my
portion (addressed to the mgmt. co.) and she pays the rest when her father
gives her money. Last month she said she "didn't have enough to cover the
rent" so she had me write her a check for my portion, and said she'd "deal"
with the rest; we have a larger than normal security deposit and "dealing"
means she would ask the mgmt. co. to take her share out of that. This
month it turns out she didn't pay anything; she called the mgmt. co and
they refused to take her share out so she just didn't pay at all and never
informed me of this. So now we owe last month, this month and a non-
payment fee. My questions are: 1. Legally do I have ANY rights? (she is
listed first on the lease, I am second) and 2. She is moving out of NYC
when our lease is up; I am staying -- I need the mgmt. co. reference
and I am really worried about this showing up on my otherwise perfect
credit report -- is there any way to save my credit? Help!
