They can use credit services, or specialized services for landlords, or regular legal databases, like Lexis, or even the housing cases (though these have fewer identifying details). Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do about it, other than keep looking for an apartment owned by a landlord who doesn't use those sources. It's public information. Just as tenants use the same databases to research landlords' past history.

: Hi there, I would like to know how a perspective landlord finds out if a tenant has been to court for non-payment? I recently applied for a new apartment and the landlords refused me for a 3 year old non-payment court appearance. what gives?
