You are on the official "Landlord sh-t list". LL ran a credit check and that non-payment popped up. Try offering more than 1 month security deposit and/or months of rent up front, if you can do that.
There are services that for a fee check the courts for this. You could also check up on a landlord. If this is in Manhattan go to 111 Centre street, 2nd floor and look up the landlord/company on their database
