Sending your payment by certified mail, preferably with a return receipt requested, is a good idea. You could also photocopy the check, along with the rent bill and the envelope in which you're mailing your payment, all on one legal-size page.

Other payment options include money orders (send them by certified mail) and the U.S. Postal Service's electronic payment system, although the landlord would also have to sign up for that.

Does your lease contain a provision for a late fee? If not, the landlord can't charge a late fee.

In New York state, tenants not only have a right to organize, they also have a right to hold meetings in the public parts of the building.
