Sleepless in NYC

Posted by Riley on January 10, 2002 at 14:53:39:

I hope someone can help me. A while ago I moved into what looked like a nice one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. I soon discovered that the wall in my bedroom that divides my apartment from my neighborís is very thin and lets in all kinds of noises (this was not obvious when I first checked the place out before signing the rental lease). Itís so bad, I can barely sleep at night if my neighbor plays music or leaves his TV on. If heís making a lot of noise during the day, half of my apartment is effectively unusable. I wrote to the landlord to complain and he wrote to my neighbor, but the problem isnít the neighbor itís the wall. He says he wonít fix it up so itís soundproof. Iím trying to find ways to get some leverage to force him to help me (my rent is very high and I had to pay a huge brokerís fee for the place), but I canít. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it easy to sue? Thanks.
