Sleepless in NYC

Posted by Riley on January 10, 2002 at 14:53:39:

I hope someone can help me. A while ago I moved into what looked like a nice one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. I soon discovered that the wall in my bedroom that divides my apartment from my neighbor’s is very thin and lets in all kinds of noises (this was not obvious when I first checked the place out before signing the rental lease). It’s so bad, I can barely sleep at night if my neighbor plays music or leaves his TV on. If he’s making a lot of noise during the day, half of my apartment is effectively unusable. I wrote to the landlord to complain and he wrote to my neighbor, but the problem isn’t the neighbor it’s the wall. He says he won’t fix it up so it’s soundproof. I’m trying to find ways to get some leverage to force him to help me (my rent is very high and I had to pay a huge broker’s fee for the place), but I can’t. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it easy to sue? Thanks.
