Having To Move Overseas/Breaking a Lease

Posted by Jane on January 02, 2002 at 23:08:06:

My sister has just renewed her lease for a year, and now has to move overseas for personal/professional reasons. She seems to be confident that she can just tell her landlord she's breaking the lease to end it at the end of March, while she will be leaving at the end of February, a month earlier, at which time she will give the landlord the keys and forfeit the deposit. That way, the landlord can rent the apartment right away, and will still have the deposit on top of that.
I can see that the landlord would benefit by the double (or nearly double) rent for March, and in Manhattan it is easy to find renters.
My sister will then be overseas for several months.
It may sound logical to her, but I've never heard of anyone doing this. Is she being realistic?
