Roach infected apartment

Posted by bogophobe on December 20, 2001 at 11:52:27:

We just moved into our newly renovated apartment just to find out there are roaches crawling everywhere. Since I have a horrible phobia of them, I immediately started fighting back. I fumigated the whole apartment, bought every possible thing on the market to combat them, had the place sprayed and gelled (out of my own pocket), and yet nothing is helping.
The building is old and I believe that is the reason for them. I am extremely clean and there is really no reason I should have them. I called my landlord, but most he did was sent the exterminator to spray some more even though I told him what I want is a full inspection of the property, so that the problem can be solved permanently, not just covered up.
I want to know what my rights are. Can I break my lease based on this alone? How much can I expect from my landlord, based on the law? What do i do if the problem persists?
Any suggestions will help.
Thank you.
