If your understanding is in writing, then you have a chance of receiving reimbursement from the LL. Verbal agreements dont necessarily count in court. For your son's condition, you should definitedly buy the purifier regardless and not wait for reimbursement. A tenant in the basement of a two family is illegal. If they are attempting to remove him, its probably already in the process, but LL still has to go through eviction proceedings via the courts. Could take several months. You dont want to jeopardize your small son's condition hoping to get reimbursement. Or you can switch your son's room where he would be least affected. Bear in mind, they cant just throw out illegal tenant. You can confirm w/ the bldg department yourself. Although, if you are a month-to-month tenant, try not to make too many waves. LL can give you 30 days to vacate and/or increase your rent, and it would be perfectly legal.
