Make an appointment with your landlord to return the keys. Let him know that you expect him to have your deposit ready on that date. If the LL wants to do an inspection, this is the time to do it. There's no reason why you should have to wait to get your money back after you're left and, if you're likely to encounter any problems, maybe you'll get a heads-up.
