No such thing as a dumb question -- if you want to leave by December 1, send your letter NOW. Walk it over NOW if you have to and make sure you get a signature. I'd fed ex it, because they will keep the signature on file for you. You have to give time for a full month to pass, and you don't want to give the LL any ammunition to be a jerk.
: This may be a terribly stupid question, but when exactly does a 30-day written notice to vacate kick in? When I tell my landlord I'm giving 30 days notice to move out, does that mean my lease continues for 30 days following the date posted on the letter or 30 days after the landlord receives the letter? (It was sent certified mail, so I know when he received it). And does thirty days notice mean my lease is over on the 30th day? i.e. if the notice kicks in on Oct. 1st, does that mean that the last day of my lease is the 29th or the 30th? Thanks for taking the time to answer a stupid but very important question. I live in NYC
