If LL agress then he must think it will be easy to rent it out again. So it's likely all ok, just ask, but have it clean/free of damage etc. Under english common law a LL is not supposed to keep a deposit if a new tenant is found right away, don't know if that applies in the US.

The lawyer handling the purchase has to inform him and transfer the damage deposits, so it's there you don't even have to ask.
