i don't mean to make light of the situation, but before you let the ol lady next door freak you out, think of simple explanations. have you ever lived in an old building? they can make a lot of strange noises, and the furnace is the least of them. your cabinets may have spring-loaded hinges that will shut if left open for a while. get some wd-40 and oil the doors and other hinges. 9 times outta 10 this sort of thing turns out to be nothing. if not, do contact the LL and see what he/she thinks. perhaps there is another vacant apartment in the building to which you can relocate.
