No signed lease...wink and handshake instead

Posted by Jae on October 17, 2001 at 12:20:15:

Hello:

I live in a basement 2-bedroom apartment with four other roommates in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Our landlord never gave us a lease, said we didn't need one even though we asked for one in the beginning. We have been there for three years and now they want to increase our rent $100 per person.

When we first moved in, the rent was only $900. And now it's $1500 and they want to push it to $2,000. The apartment is not worth $2000. We have yet to even get our heat on, last year we had no heat for a week in the dead of winter. Also our electricity constantly goes out and they just finally fixed our kitchen sink after we complained for more than a year.

Do we have any rights?
