Legal and illegal apartments are a bit of a red herring. I've seen "illegal" apartments that are brand new and immaculate, and we all know of perfectly "legal" apartments that look like hovels.

So focus on obvious safety and health issues at first, rather than jumping to conclusions about the worthiness of an apartment based on a Certificate of Occupancy.

: I rent an apartment in a two family private residence in Brooklyn. How can I find out if it is a legal two family home, with a certificate of occupancy?
