i don't know all the details but a little problem getting the LL the rent is certainly not grounds for eviction, and his method is highly dubious. sounds to me like a set up; he was probably getting all your checks (have any been cashed?) and trying to fabricate a problem. he should have done some more research. can't say really without more info but i'd venture that he just wants you out and has no real case. i doubt he will let it go to court, but you should definitely consult a lawyer now.
