can you sublet the place to someone reliable until the end of the lease? can you find someone reliable with good credit history to take over the lease and present them to LL?

As previously posted, LL has to make a good faith effort (run advertisements, for example) to rent the place and can't sit back from now til March (LL would have trouble proving his point that LL "tried" for all that time when you take LL to court) and in the meantime yes, if apartment's empty, you must pay the rent. Usually a month's time is sufficient.

Did you check your lease about the notifying time? If the lease says to give a months' notice or 31 days' notice and you did that, then the LL would have an even tougher time to prove you have to pay anything further. Did you get your security back? Can you ask LL to apply the security as a month's rent to cover things? Get everything in writing.
