Service Dog in a "no dogs" apartment

Posted by Tallulah on October 03, 2001 at 00:06:07:

Hoping you can help me out..
I live in the Bronx, and rented an apartment in March. (The building has about 100 units). In August, I brought my service dog to live with me. I sent my LL a letter registered, and return receipt telling him that I did so, and that the dog was a service dog needed for my well-being (I have panic disorder as well as Bipolar depression). I also gave LL a letter from my Doctor stating that my dog is a service dog and needed for my emotional and physical well-being and health.
This started August 20 (when I told him in writing about the dog). It is now October 2, and I just got a letter from his lawyer telling me to get rid of the dog or move out.
I can't live without my dog. I am very responsible with him to make SURE the LL had no reason to get rid of the dog on the dogs merit (destruction of property, ect). Also, there are numerous dogs in the building in varying sizes and ages.

What recourse do I possibly have?

thanks
