Questions like this bring out the true nature of rent stabilization: not a system that helps tenants, but rather, a system manipulated by insiders for the personal gain of themselves and their friends.

Can the landlord get rid of you? Sounds like you're already long out of there. What sort of proof may he have ? Use your imagination: videotapes, testimony of witnesses, the fact that you have a residence elsewhere.

What should you do? How badly do you want to keep renting an apartment you don't live in? Fighting this would be a costly process of multiple court appearances in New York, and you would still lose.
