Virtually any real estate listing in Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx is public information ... any broker could tell you what is for sale. If your looking to buy and don't want to "spook" your landlord, you might just mention that you are looking to buy a house "like this one". If she decides to sell perhaps she would deal with you directly, rather than going through a broker.

But if you are seriously looking to buy, don't wait for your landlady to act, instead, get to a broker and check the classifieds see what is available.
