what exactly is this smell? where is its source? i sure hope its not gas leaking from a faulty line (or the stove itself if its pilot lights are out). that can be bad news. if it's not that, then what is it? a dead animal in the floorboards? you gotta figure this out, cuz what i know from smells, they don't just get better, they only get worse.

pinpoint where its coming from; if its a gas leak, call the gas company and have them look into it. write a letter ot the landlord and explain that if this isn't taken car eof you will withhold rent. you've only been there 4 days, so its unlikely its your fault, so you are in a good position to complain. as for cooling the apartment ... welcome to new york city!
