The inspector was probably checking because the city has stepped up crack downs on illegal conversions. Your landlord may be a good carpenter but is he a skilled electrician too? What's focused the city's interest in this is the increasing number of fires in these illegal units, many of which, like yours, were built by recent immigrants who either didn't understand the law or prefer to live outside it in the cash economy. Some pols may wink/nod at it but FDNY certainly isn't.
