i dunno if the laws are different where you live, but in NYC a landlord is only liable for tenant property loss/damage if the cause was something the LL clearly should have been able to prevent. for instance, if your apartment had been robbed because the LL refused to fix a broken front door lock, they'd be totally repsonsible. but when it comes to tenants going nuts and beating up cars, it seems unlikely you'd be able to prove the LL knew this guy was a threat to other people's property. if this guy has a record a doing stuff like this, while he was a tenant, you might have some kind of case. but as it stands i think the LL is being most generous in their offer pay for half of the damages. with any luck the court will nail this guy and you won't have to pay anything. good luck.
