either way, in NY state, the LL 'must mitigate his damages': he's gonna hafta prove that he tried to rent the place at the same price you paid and could not. fat chance. but you have to make him prove it by taking him to court, here, in NYC. he knows where you live. got friends w/empty sofas?

water-under-da-bridge-dept: ya shoulda done the 'written request to assign your lease': also NY state law, tenant's absolute right. it's one of the RPL's: search here for 'assign': musta been discussed recently, it's a recurring topic, second cousin to 'sublet' (same law).
