It can be difficult and time consuming when the tenant is rent regulated , has a lease. But you aren't regulated and you don't have a lease anymore. Staying in the city, you'll likely end up paying more than you do now for comparable space. So either get off yer butt and find a place, any place, or negotiate with your LL, perhaps he'll take a little less of a rent increase for a 1 year renewal. No matter how you slice it, you'll pay: moving expenses, brokers fee, 1st month and security deposit, and all that time finding another place. If your rent increase comes out to less than $1,500 over the course of a year, unless you find something extraordinary, stay put. You've already said you haven't been able to find anything comparable.
