Consider this your lucky day.......

The economy is crashing, people are getting laid off, the recovery wont be till next year maybe, so let the landlord go broke gouging someone else.

find a nice cheap place for $2000 or less and laugh at everyone going broke and filing bankruptcy in a couple of months...

: Last year my landlord raised our rent from $3000/month to $3500/month. Now as our lease is up at the end of september, he plans on raising our rent to $4100 (he would only let us resign a 1 year lease instead of the 2 year lease we would have liked). Can anyone tell me if he is allowed to do this? We have had many problems with leaks, electrical outlets not working, etc - and many of our neighbors in the other units also have many complaints with the landlord.

: Does anyone have any advice or could point us in the right direction? we cannot afford such a hefty rent increase... and were not even sure if the last increase was legally allowed to be so large.

: (we have a written lease, 12 units in the building, not sure about date or coop/condo status)
